The Mechanics of a Word
The confusion over ausrotten is a confusion of two claims that get printed as one word.
Object / Count
You take a stock out of the ground. That is an act on an object. The object is the plant as one piece. Stump and stem. The plant entire. You take that. Whole is that object. It is what the hands can hold, lever, and haul. After the act there is a hole, and a root-crown beside it. That is all the hoe has done.
Total is not that. Total is a count of what remains after. Zero of the kind. No second plant, no seed bank, no name left. A count is not an object. Some, or none, is not a stump.
The object is what the hands take: this stock, whole. The count is how many of that kind are left after: some, or none.
They are not the same kind of sentence. One names a thing. The other names a tally.
German ausrotten is built for the first sentence. Aus- is out. The stem is the clearing verb roden / reuten : tear the rootstock from the soil. Fell the top if there is a trunk. Dig around the stump. Cut the laterals. Lever the crown. Kill only the top and the root can send a shoot. Take the stock and that specimen has no seat left. Mit Stumpf und Stiel is the old intensifier: not the visible part, the whole piece.
That is uprooting. It is not a count of the forest.
Two Languages, One Hoe
English split the labor and then the glossaries glued it back. Root out , grub out , uproot stayed near the hole. Eradicate ( ex + radix ) is used as if the field were empty. Living English almost never says a man eradicated a stump. It says he eradicated a disease. The Latin word absorbed the tally. The farm verbs did not. So “eradicate” is the usual dictionary stand-in for ausrotten , but it is not sitting in the dirt work. You can take this oak whole and leave a wood full of oaks. Totality has to be added: by repeating the act until the count hits zero, or by speaking as if the kind, not the specimen, were the object in your hands.
The neighboring English lookalikes do not explain the German verb. Rot is decay. Rodent is gnaw. Color rot is red. Roden is rip the stock. Folk etymology wants compost or incisors. The gesture is a hoe.
German never split the verb. The hoe-sense and the tally-sense share a spelling. That sharing is the confusion. It is not proof that the object-act already contained the count. It is proof that the same infinitive can be lifted off the stump and set over a category.

On 18 December 1941, at 16:00, in the Führerhauptquartier Wolfsschanze, Himmler wrote a note from a meeting with Hitler:
The note does not write “Juden ausrotten.” It writes Judenfrage — then a vertical bar — then als Partisanen auszurotten .
The bar is the pause. Left of it: a heading, a file, not yet the verb. Right of it: the collapse. Jews, under that heading, are to be treated as partisans, and the verb that follows is the stock-verb. Not two items. One heading, then the manner and the act written as a single result.
The hesitation is graphic, not moral. A line in the ink before the infinitive. Then yes: as partisans, auszurotten .
Als is doing the work. It names the guise under which the verb is to be used. The English gloss that turns the line into “eradicate the Jews” skips the bar and skips als . That gloss is the count-sentence — zero of the kind — parked on the word Jews with the rest of the syntax thrown away.
Reading the Slip
The Waffen-SS lines underneath stay what they are: the next points on the same slip. The note does not swell. It files the collapse and goes on.
Knowing the parts is what historians have denied us. They give the slogan and take the bar. They give eradicate and take als . That is doubly painful. The parts do not wash the room. No matter the parts, Hitler remained responsible.
